Whether you have been a nanny for many years and are looking to move onto a new role, or if you are searching for your first nanny job, it can be a difficult process. This is especially true if it has been a long time since you last applied for a job, or if you haven’t applied for a role before.

We have put together some tips for looking for a nanny job which we hope will help you to find your perfect position.

Update your CV

When applying for any job, it is important that your CV is up to date, looks neat and is in the correct order. Many people exclude experience and skills off of their CV, as they feel it may not be of significant importance. Some families may be looking for an extra skill or talent, which could be something that makes the nanny stand out from the rest.

Keep the information on your CV relevant but look for transferable skills that you may have learnt in other roles if you haven’t had a childcare position before.

For example, you may have picked up organisational skills from an office job, or great social skills from your role in retail. Both of these skills would be valuable when working with children, so could impress potential employers.

Be realistic

It can be easy to get excited over jobs when searching for a new role, but they may not necessarily be what you should be aiming for.

Even though it is always important to aim high, you must always remain realistic when choosing jobs to apply for, as you’ll face disappointment if you apply for jobs which you are not suitable for. For example, if a role requires you to speak French and you don’t, you shouldn’t apply for it. As even if the rest of the job sounds perfect, you should respect the family’s requirements.

You may also find that you need to compromise on some aspects such as pay, accommodation or working hours. So it is worth working out for yourself which of these things you are happy to be flexible on before you start interviewing.

Start the job search

There are a variety of ways in which you start looking for a nanny job. You might choose to check your local paper for vacancies, sign up to online job boards, or rely on family or friends to share news of jobs they may have heard of.

A great way to search for nanny jobs is by signing up to an efficient nanny agency. The nanny agency will recommend nanny jobs, based on your requirements and experience and will inform you when a potential position meets your requirements.

When you sign up to a nanny agency you will also receive advice about the kinds of roles that suit you and you can ask questions if you are unsure of what to do at any point.

Prepare for interviews

If you are chosen to be invited to an interview following a job application, you must ensure that you are prepared before you turn up. This shows that you are professional and organised.

Before your interview, make sure that you have the full address and know where you are going, as you want to avoid getting stressed trying to find it or risk turning up late. The interview may be at the family’s home or somewhere neutral, this is usually down to the family’s preference.

Dress smartly so that you make a great first impression and if you know the interview will involve playing with the children you should make sure you are dressed appropriately.

Interviews are always stressful, but try to relax as much as possible so that your true personality comes across. Be honest with your answers and be prepared for questions about your values, thoughts on discipline and how you would help the families children to reach their developmental milestones, among others.
