Being a nanny is a very rewarding job but there is no denying that it can be both physically and emotionally tiring, which means that it is vital that as a nanny you take sufficient time out to relax when needed. These five great ways for nannies to unwind should give you the inspiration needed to enjoy a bit of ‘me time’ and practice some self-care which is very important when you have such a demanding role.

Spend time with non-nannies

Although chatting with people who do the same job as you do is a fantastic way to share stories and tips with each other, sometimes taking time away from the nanny world is the only way that you can truly forget about work for a little while and just indulge in catch-ups with family and friends.

Try organising a lunch or afternoon tea with your closest friends or spending a day with your parents so you can chat about all things non-nanny related and give your brain a rest from thinking about the children you take care of.

Take a trip

If you have a long weekend or some annual leave to enjoy then why not book yourself a little trip away either by yourself or with friends? You don’t have to travel far, and short trips can be completed on a budget, so there really is no reason why you can’t escape for a while and visit somewhere new.

If you know when you will have time off in advance you may be able to find reasonable flights or a ferry trip which can give you access to Europe, or for a more last-minute option there are plenty of stunning places in the UK that you are sure to love exploring.

Exercise

Even though running around after children can be counted as exercise, you might not have time to take part in physical activities that you really enjoy. One of the best ways to unwind is to let off some steam by taking a walk or run, going swimming, or taking part in sport or an exercise class.

We suggest researching activities in your local area, as you might find something that you would love to participate in, which will also give you the opportunity to meet new people who you share a common interest with.

Book a spa day

The ultimate way to achieve total relaxation is to book a spa day where you can just sit back and indulge in fabulous treats all day long. Whether you decide to simply use the facilities or to book yourself a treatment or two, you are sure to leave the spa feeling like a new person.

A spa day is a great activity to share with a friend, or you could choose to enjoy some peace and quiet by yourself, and many places have delicious food options for you to enjoy too.

Do absolutely nothing

It is not often that you get the chance to sit down and do nothing, so there is no harm in using your time off to do just this! Even once work is over for the day it can be difficult to properly unwind as there are so many things rushing around your head about the next day, but by planning to do nothing you can give yourself time to clear your mind and completely relax.

You don’t have to just sit in silence though, why not pick up a book that you have wanted to read for ages? Or binge watch a show that you have been hearing all about on Netflix? This is your time to be a bit selfish and do exactly what you like, so take the opportunity to think about yourself and do whatever will make you happy and relaxed.

We hope that these five great ways for nannies to unwind have helped you to decide what you might like to do when you next have some free time, as it really is important to relax every now and then, to ensure that you are mentally and physically prepared for each working day.
